And there is pansies, that’s for thoughts
audio installation/ audio performance 16 min., ceramics, pansy seeds, 2021
The audio is a voiceover by a person experiencing grief after loss of her brother. It is a confessional report of different stages of grief, different emotional states, and different spaces of public life. The subject also reflects on the difficulty of grieving in the context of life in a neoliberal world, social media and the problem with the capitalization of death. It is a very personal statement, but at the same time reflective and can be a starting point for considering the role of grief in social life.
The title of the work is a quote from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It includes the words of Ophelia, who talks about the symbolic meaning of various herbs and flowers. She mentions pansies as a symbol of memory and thought. In the last part of the audio performance the narrator talks about the Polish etymology of the name of this flower. The piece is presented in the company of a pansy- shaped urn with seeds inside.
