COMFORT IS
Recipes for dishes that bring a sense of security
cookbook, 2023
The book COMFORT IS is the result of the workshops with patients of the Psychiatric Hospital in Rybnik. The workshops were organized in cooperation with the Kronika Center for Contemporary Art in Bytom and were part of a project curated by Marta Lisok and co-curated by Jolanta Jastrząb and Dominik Ritszel titled "Antihandbook. How to build an invisible place?"
The two keywords for my activity were food and comfort. Together with patients, referring to sensory memory, we talked about dishes that give them joy and a sense of security. In the process, carefree and nostalgic moments began to emerge from the memories, for which food became the vehicle. The result of this meeting is a cookbook with recipes for the aforementioned dishes. The way the recipes are written, often free of weight units, focused on emotions and senses, is important. In addition, the book includes a recipe for potato pancakes with stew, which we prepared together at the hospital as part of the workshop. Cooking together, which is at the same time a process of constant negotiation, a social gathering and physical effort, raised the issue of work related to comfort
The book was created thanks to the commitment of patients and employees of the Psychiatric Hospital in Rybnik, the Kronika Center for Contemporary Art in Bytom and graphic designer Marta Sieczkowska from Wroclaw.
