World! The serpent of eternity is crushing you in a circle with its scales.
painting series, 2019- 2020
acrylic on canvas
In this painting series, I use the tradition of medieval painting. These paintings are characterized by rich symbolism, but I do not want to refer to intricate and unknown symbols. In my work, I focus on commonly recognizable signs belonging to pop culture. However, the way I build a picture, and thus a narrative, is the use of seemingly outdated patterns. The clash of these two qualities is intended to cause dissonance and to break away from the habits that control the global circulation of meanings and visual content.
Thus, I use, in some ways, dusty methods, filling the images with the dilemmas of modernity. The only symbol reaching far back is the penetrating snake, which in Christian iconography is the embodiment of Satan, the herald of defeat, misery or danger. As the title of the project indicates - a quote taken from Juliusz Słowacki’s “Kordian”, the snake is a threat to the existing order, a transformation we fear.
My painting works are about the status quo, about its sources and possible changes.
